Spoilers ahead in case any of you haven’t watched the season finale of one of the funnest shows I can remember. Honestly this show blew me away from episode 1. So I just wanted to write this blog discussing my thoughts on season 1 now that I have finished the season finale.
1st things 1st James Gunn is a freaking genius. He has to be the most fun director in the game. Just look at his movies. Bananas visuals that almost always seem driven by the music of his films. I love how in each of James Gunn’s films, the soundtrack is practically a cast member. A brilliant director that has earned every inch of his long leash when directing movies, and can get away with anything he wants to do. Don’t believe me… just ask James
“Yeah, they kind of let me do whatever I want,” Gunn told Rolling Stone yesterday during a phone interview from the set of the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie.-Alan Sepenwall, Rolling Stone
I would say this is apparent in the finale. Very apparent. He had a Godzilla sized caterpillar getting milked, yes… milked, while a cave is falling around it. And it works so good it’s crazy.
Going into the show I didn’t feel like their would be much depth to Peacemaker. I should have learned not to doubt a director that has made me weep over the loss of a tree in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1. He is incredible at giving just the right amount of personality to the strange and alien so that these creatures motivations and feelings can be understood. He did that with Groot and Rocket, and now he did it with butterflies, when you see their personality, whether through the description of their homeworld’s struggle or just the mannerism of the actual butterflies.
This episode’s fight scenes are second to none. So great, but following the best fight I’ve seen in the show, and arguably one of my favorite “super hero” genre fights.
In this episode we see why they had to leave their planet and why they are invading Earth, to apparently save it. By infiltrating the highest in government the Butterflies planned to help save Earth, and bring PEACE. To which Peacemaker quickly pops them both and human torpedoed (yes, its exactly what it sounds like) Adebayo into the caterpillar kaiju. Such an awesome and small way to show such a large change in John Cena’s character. It is this moment that we see him finally put the care of those he cherishes over worldwide peace.
Are we sure Adrian Chase isn’t like a metahuman or something? This resilient SOB also has just god-like weapon skills. I mean he no look flicked a knife into a butterfly’s face after having been shot in the back! That was incredible. I love him consistently walking into frame after a big battle wraps up, “Hey guys what’s up?” Everytime. Gets me everything. The charachter is so awesome. Whenever the show will kill him, because no HBO show has not killed my favorite tertiary charachter of that show. So I’m preparing myself to lose him eventually but I love this character. He honestly became like top 5 favorite DC movie charachters. And no, I’m not counting the Nolan films. But as far as DCEU goes this guy is such a better comic relief than the current Flash has ever hinted at being.
Loved James Gunn’s use of the shield in this finale. He basically said, “Captain America ain’t got shit on this thing. And I mean Peacemaker was cutting fools in half with his before he shot it into a guys neck.
This was awesome. So great to see that they are crossing over. James Gunn needs to be given the keys to DC like Feige was at marvel. He needs to direct this universe going forward. I’m really hoping this is the case, and I’m hoping we see Peacemaker working with the Suicide Squad again or leading a team with Vigilante. Need that.
