JUST GET ME ONE TOP FREE AGENT! Tyrann Mathieu to the Colts seems like it may have legs. Short thoughts.

Just one time. Just one time I want to land a top tier free agent. What’s the point of all this cap space if we aren’t going to use it on a stud or two? Tyrann Mathieu appears to be having odds on him to the Colts. It appears the gambling site oddschecker has moved the Colts into the odds favorite to get Tyrann Mathieu from free agency, following his tenure in Kansas City.

Tyrann Mathieu seems to be the biggest named free agent still available on the defensive side of the ball. With the Colts being seen as favorite a few places, I have to say this must really have some legs. Because when are we EEEVVVEEERRRR the favorite for a projected free agent landing zone? Not too often. I seem to get my hopes up each and every year that we will get the free agents of top caliber, but rarely is this ever the case.

I’ve gotten my hopes up time and time before. And time and time before I’ve been let down. We have yet to make a real splash in free agency in the Ballard era. The largest splash we’ve seen was Carson Wentz and I’ll say the unexpected move of Matt Ryan was solid, with the actual verdict to come following his play on the field. We haven’t had a solid free agent track record from our current regime. So I am cautious to get too invested in potentially wishful thinking.

Although, I believe if the Colts can secure Tyran Mathieu and he can perform up to the level that we’ve seen from him over the course of his career, the Colts defense could have the most intuitive defensive duo in the NFL. Darius Leonard and Tyronn Mathieu are both very, very intuitive players. Their instincts and knowledge for the game seem to put them in positions to make a play more often than not. Not many players possess this gift to any degree, while these two guys may be some of the best examples of this in the NFL.

He would enter that Colts’ locker room and immediately seek to aid Darius in setting a tone of attitude and rock steady defense. His resume speaks for itself and would speak volumes to those within the Colts organization. He is a genuine leader, and after watching the Colts last year, other than Darius, I feel like our leadership was lacking. The Colts Need to go out and get the guys that will help “set the tone” for lack of a better explanation.

While all of this is very promising I can’t help but fear a potential fall off in Tyrann’s game following his next contract signing. I’m sorry I just don’t see him remaining in that top tier of NFL safeties for too much longer. I imagine he may be looking for this next contract to be his last MAJOR payday. If this is the case, I think he may be looking for a longer contract, and get really comfortable wherever he lands next. I don’t know how tied down we’d want to be with a major contract spent on Mathieu when there seem to be more imperative roles that need to be paid and cemented within our franchise. (Fingers crossed we got QB covered for a few more years if Matt Ryan should find a second wind in Indianapolis and want to stick around).

Here’s hoping something can come of this. I will be over the moon if we are able to land him. Because ultimately, this salary cap is going to climb. And there seems to be more and more ways that creative accounting is allowing teams to manipulate that salary cap. So throw it all at him. Get our number 1 recruiter Darius Leonard on the case! I’m ready to see Tyrann Mathieu suit it up For The Shoe.

Chris Ballard says a whole lot of nothing, while actually saying all he needs to regarding Wentz.

Link to Chris Ballard’s press conference from the Senior Bowl

While saying absolutely nothing, Chris Ballard was able to almost perfectly express his own frustration over the Carson Wentz situation. How much must this guy hate having to answer that question with a restrained and controlled, hollow answer day after day?

TY. I love you. Personally, your in my 5 favorite Colts of all time. I say favorite because I know he isn’t the best, but boy has he been a pleasure for a large portion of my life watching sports religiously. But his lack of production as well as the injuries across the board tells us the Indianapolis Colts need an overhaul in the wide receiver room (apart from Pittman Jr.). We have to go get some options to throw the ball deep if we really want a qb who CAN throw the ball deep!

I’m starting to spiral on the fear of this season. Indianapolis has pigeon holed themselves by building a roster that is quite arguable to most well rounded in the league. Absolute Dawgs on both sides of the ball. Can handle their own in a dude off against any squad in the league. But the apparent talent at each position only sheds light on just how poor the situation at Quarterback is. You can’t win in this league without production under center. And while Carson had his moments, the guy seemed to be lacking a sniff of a clutch gene. With more and more coming out detailing how the Quarterback off season may not be a quarter as hectic as everyone had thought it might be I am becoming more and more resigned to having to run it back with Wentz.

And listen, there are ffffaaarrrr too many Colts fans that say “it’s been a year! give him some time.” To them I say, that is the dumbest thing I have heard in a minute! This is years of bad play. He got more than enough time to prove himself in Philly and got ran out of town. Also, newsflash if you don’t understand how the salary cap and drafting goes in the NFL, good teams can’t keep all their guys. The Colts are in their window of opportunity to get a Super Bowl. It feels like we are in a Ferrari driving for greatness, only problem is we are missing the steering wheel to steer the whole thing!

As each day passes I grow more weary on the reality of the Colts QB situation. I also grow more convinced we need to go get Jameis to eat some “W”s in Indianapolis.

I keep convincing myself that our defense will be able to negate his own Turnover rate (which to Winston’s credit is ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDING) to a certain extent and while also giving us a QB who racks up yards. I mean his stats are pretty hilarious considering how often he’s been at or near the top in total yards in the NFL while also leading the league in turnovers at points. If we have to have a sub par option, may as well be a fun one to watch!

I WANT TO TRUST YOU GUYS, I DO!!! But come on!

A look at the Aaron Rodgers destination odds from Vegas, and the Colts’ place in those odds.

Green Bay Packers-250
Denver Broncos+350
San Francisco 49ers+800
Pittsburgh Steelers+1200
Indianapolis Colts+1200
Tampa Bay Buccaneers+1400
New Orleans Saints+2000
these are the odds currently available on Draft Kings

We are looking to land a whale here in Indianapolis. Looking at these odds, I actually gain some confidence. See whenever I actually picture Aaron Rodgers as an Indianapolis Colt it seems like a pipe dream. If the number 12 were to be resurrected for Aaron, I may finally be able to come to terms with the way Andrew Luck left us (Yes it still hurts!!! We should have 2 rings with this squad and him under center! So Yeah STILL HURTS!!!). It looks like Vegas is more than convinced Aaron Rodgers will remain in Green Bay. The fact the Denver Broncos are favored so heavily over the other options doesn’t make much sense to me personally. It’s a new day in the NFL. There’s a new generation of QBs on the scene and no single division is that more apparent than in the AFC West. Do you think Old Man Rodgers wants to face both Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes II twice a season. If he can dictate where he’s going at all then why would he want to head there. That ain’t it chief.

Looking at Indianapolis’ odds gives me confidence that Aaron Rodgers the Colt is an actual possibility. I genuinely felt, before really looking into the odds, that Pittsburgh would be a potential landing spot that actually made sense for all involved. Seeing the Indianapolis Colts have the same odds to land him gets me very excited. A lot of the times I overthink Indianapolis Colts odds or news and assume I’m seeing stuff align because I want to, almost wishful thinking on my part. But, wishful thinking that I can identify and often times I discredit the real stories because I convince myself its too good to be true (My teams across all sports have hurt me in case you can’t tell).

So confirmed. Rodgers to Indianapolis has potential legs here!!! Tied for 3rd in odds (other than GB again) is a very nice place to be sitting in my opinion. Just looking at each of the teams on this list I get confidence in knowing that anyone looking at those names and asks themselves who’s a QB away from winning a Super Bowl, I think Indianapolis is the no brainer. Jonathon Taylor’s run game will open the field, while an amazing offensive line is blocking, and Darius is leading the stout defense. What’s not to love there… I guess the wide receiver situation. Pittman is still growing into a stud in this league, but if we could go get Allen Robinson and have a legitimate deep threat, I don’t see how he couldn’t want to come to Indianapolis.

Last thing…

How crazy is it that Jordan Love will be taken in the first round and then never even receive a shot for that team? What a garbage move that pick was. Should have let the Colts get him Green Bay. I mean on the bright side, how important is it to hit on your first round picks? *sarcasm*

Chris Ballard deserves to be on the hot seat. Why do Colts fans we give him so much slack?

The entire offseason has been centered around our search for a Quarterback. While questions regarding Frank Reich and Chris Ballard especially are present, but much fewer and farther between. Why is it that Chris Ballard is gifted so much… let’s say “benefit of the doubt”. In the six years since Chris Ballard has taken over as general manager the Colts have 1 playoff win. Any other fan base would be calling for the man’s head. I’m more perplexed because honestly I still believe Ballard’s a good GM.

But why is that?

He’s been able to build out one of the deepest rosters in the entire National Football League. A team that can contend at each and every position is a dangerous one, only problem is the most neglected position was quarterback. Of course, Chris Ballard thought he was inheriting a sure fire Hall of Famer in Andrew Luck. But the moment that was not the case, that had to become our main priority. End of story. You can’t win in the NFL without a QB. The Bengals almost just proved that sometimes you may be able to win with OONNLLYY a QB (and Chase of course). But QB must be addressed, and I really think that he was looking to build a powerhouse roster then draft a competent QB on a rookie contract to lead the team. That is a great plan, so long as that QB is coming down the line.

I would say the single biggest reason for Chris Ballard’s slack as GM is the 2018 draft. Drafting Quenton Nelson and then finding Darius Leonard in the second. I say finding because looking back now I would believe these guys to go top 3 overall from that class. Still granting that #1 spot to Josh Allen from the 2018 draft class. What a draft for the Colts. We picked up the two tone setters for our team in that same year. Great draft. So what have you done for me lately?

I genuinely believe that we as Indianapolis Colts fans have been conditioned to accept terrible choices through our tenure with Ryan Grigson. Ryan Grigson, his stench still resonates. What a terrible NFL GM. Terrible. Trash. Garbage. Trent RICHARDSON!!!! How about an offensive line to protect our franchises most valuable asset? “NAH LET’S GET GRANDPA ANDRE JOHNSON ON THE SQUAD!” Decisions like these are what made Andrew Luck hate football enough to quit.

It honestly feels like Chris Ballard may have overcorrected on the situation, seems like we’ve spent years addressing everything but the most essential piece to a franchise’s success. We need to learn from the past, but come on. We need a freaking quarterback!!!

Listen, before you think I’m being overreactive or quick to can a General Manager, I’d like to express that I truly believe the current state of the NFL hiring process is absolutely detrimental to a team’s success. Teams like the Dolphins, so quick to fire a coach, are absolute idiots to me. How is anyone supposed to change a program into a winner when they aren’t given the time to do so? Just can’t be done. I’m all for stability, but I’d like for that stability to land on a Super Bowl contender, not a team consistently finding themselves in the last seed or as the last one out of the playoffs.

The Colts Need to Cut Carson Wentz and spring for Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson, or Aaron Rodgers

I’d say it’s about past time that the Carson Wentz Era in Indianapolis has come to an end. We are at a crucial impass. We must win NOW!!!

There’s just no winning with Carson Wentz at the helm of the team. The Colts find themselves in their WIN NOW window. Unfortunately, we can’t take the take for Carson to figure it out or “get comfortable”. He ran Frank Reich’s offense for years, if he doesn’t get it by now, what are we even doing here? The Carson Wentz era is coming to a close, and it absolutely has too. We just saw teams make the playoffs that have franchise studs under center for any team that was making any real push. The Colts are a Super Bowl team without a Super Bowl Quarterback right now. So I just wanted to look at 3 options that are making themselves ever more apparent and each day.

Russell Wilson

First let’s discuss Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson is a proven gamer, that has stepped up time and time again in huge moments. He is a top quarterback and an absolute master of his craft. A proven Super Bowl champion playmaker should be a no brainer right? Well personally, I don’t want the Indianapolis Colts to take on such an odd duck. I mean anyone who has ever seen Russell Wilson describe his inner persona “Mr. Unlimited” as his hero (I’m pretty sure both the multiple personas and the inflated sense of self here both lean towards sociopathic in my mind) knows how unsettling this guy can be. Someone that odd has garnered a reputation for being a little off from the rest of the league by now in his career. It may be one thing two work with that when you’ve drafted it and have built the entire locker room around that. I just believe that a lot of these factors make it hard for Russell to be able to plug into a championship locker room and click with the guys.

It’s a no for me dog.

Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers is not a pending free agent. He and the Packers agreed to a restructured contract last summer. In that deal, a void year was added for 2023 – meaning he would be able to enter free agency and be ineligible for the franchise tag after next season. The contract was also structured so that the Packers would save nearly $20 million against the cap if Rodgers is traded before June 2022. Based on that language, many have speculated that he will seek a trade this offseason.

-Logan Reardon, NBC SPORTS

This one is ACTUALLY getting interesting. Aaron Rodgers to Indianapolis sounds like a shitty day dream I may have had the year we ran it with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback. Love the heck out Jacoby, he just isn’t “THE GUY”. Every team in the NFL is looking The Guy. Aaron Rodgers in one step about “the guy” he’s entered the realm of “That Dude”. “The Guy” can get into your franchise and make you a competitor, “That Dude” can win a Super Bowl with any team so long as he’s on it. If Aaron Rodgers goes to the Indianapolis Colts, the Colts would immediately become Super Bowl favorites in my book. Yes, we would need to address a deep threat option in the receiving corp, but we would be absolutely set for a Super Bowl run.

What’s helping the Colts in the Rodgers race would be their location in the AFC South, meaning that the only way the Green Bay Packers would have to face their spurned QB in a playoff game would be in the Super Bowl. This also helps the Broncos or anyone else in the AFC in their bid for Aaron Rodgers. I wouldn’t really be getting to wound up by Aaron Rodgers to Indianapolis rumors, Rodgers is notoriously “hollywood” and I wouldn’t be surprised if following his time in Green Bay he would want to overcorrect to one of the largest markets possible. I will say, the fact that even ESPN reports this as a possibility makes me fear for the all too familiar let down sure to come my way.

Kyler Murray

While Aaron Rodgers is by far the best option in my opinion, especially for a “win now” team like the Colts, I think I’d rather have Kyler Murray. Yes, Aaron would give us the best shot at a Super Bowl right now, but if the Colts were able to go out and land Kyler Murray than we would be a Super Bowl contender RIGHT NOW, with a franchise QB for the forseeable future. Whatever team gets Aaron Rodgers will most likely be dealing with a Manning to Denver or Tom Brady to Tampa Bay vibe. Both awesome scenarios resulting in Super Bowls for those teams, but both short in tenure. With Kyler Murray under center the run game could explode behind the combination of Jonathon Taylor, the offensive line, and now the scattiest quarterback out there.

Any way you boil it down. It’s time for everyone here to move on. Unfortunately, I don’t know what this would mean for Carson Wentz, as I don’t know how many other places he will get serious starting QB knods. If you couldn’t take this Colts team to the playoffs, there is a serious problem. One that MUST be addressed.

For the Shoe,

Rams win Super Bowl 56. quarter by quarter thoughts and recap

Heading into the game the media made had made the past two weeks The Joe Burrow show on every major news outlet. And rightfully so. He’s been proving that he’s the Big Game Kid!

I know I spew a lot of trash about the burning hell hole that is Los Angeles, but what an awesome stadium. SoFi is truly a site to see that I would risk a trip to Los Angeles for. But without further ado. To the game!

First quarter

Odell Beckham Jr. Grabs the TD from Matthew Stafford to get the score to 7-0. While the Los Angeles offense was kicking off with Matthew Stafford connecting on his first handful of passes in the game.

The Bengals have not been able to piece anything together. At the kick of this game Joe Burrow is running for his life, looking to get it to receivers who’ve barely ran through their routes. Not looking great until Joe was able to piecemeal a drive together painfully culminating in the Evan McPherson kick and bringing the score to 7-3.

Ending score of first quarter: Bengals 3 – Rams 7

BOOOOOOOO!!! OBJ BOO!

2nd Quarter

Big starting grab by Odell Beckham Jr. Leads to a drive resulting in a Cooper Kupp touchdown. Following that is a missed PAT and what appears to be a stubbed toe for LA Rams. Bringing that score to 13-3.

While the Bengals are started less than stellar they have begun to piece together a resistance. During the second half the Bengals run the HB pass and that’ll be 6 points for the Bengals! Score was now 10-13 in favor of the Rams.

Ending score 2nd quarter: Bengals 10-Rams 13.

At halftime it appeared that we had a real contest on our hands. A true battle was taking place much to the surprise of many LA supporters. But not to the surprise of Joe Burrow’s apostles. Second half was looking to be an absolute battle to decide the 2021-2022 NFL season!

Come the opening drive of the 3rd quarter Joe Burrow delivers Higgens a 75 yard strike giving the Rams a 17 to 13 lead. Then following up with a McPherson field goal their next drive it began to look like it was now Bengals game to lose. Then the Rams hit a field goal to bring it to Bengals 20 Rams 16.

End of 3rd quarter score:Bengals 20-Rams 16

4th Quarter

After a back and forth 4th quarter the LA Rams realized they should probably return to what has worked for them all season and Stafford connected with Cooper Kupp to take the lead 23-20 with 1:25 left to play. The magic surrounding Joe Burrow had to persevere for one more drive…..

And it didn’t.

So good for LA. La-di-freaking dah. It’s a wrap! LA wins another championship good for them!

I hate sports.

(Really though props to Aaron Donald. He can’t help he was drafted by them. He is a monster that deserves this. Just wish it was with someone else).

Oh well on to 2022-2023. Go Colts

Bengals have to defy all logic and analytics for a 3rd time in a row! Super Bowl 56 (opinion piece).

So here we are. The grind that has been the 2021-2022 NFL season gets its bookend tomorrow in Los Angeles. Super Bowl 56 is upon us and the Cincinnatti Bengals are looking to take down the Los Angeles Rams.

Everyone is rooting for the Bengals it seems (unless your in their division or the 4 Rams fans out there). And who could blame them?

Joe Burrow has made his way into everybody’s heart with his playmaking big game abilities. He is the absolute man. Does BIG things in BIG situations, against BIG odds. What’s not to love when your QB is drippin in so much swag he makes O’Dell Beckham Jr. Look like Bernie Sanders

The Bengals took down the Coach of the Year Mike Vrabel’s Tennessee Titans. They then took the Kansas City’s high powered offense, where the Bengals were able to capitalize on Joe Burrow’s gunslinging and their defenses ability to capitalize on the rare Mahommes error. Although, he seemed to be making a large amount of errors, for his quality of course. Now they just need to beat the Los Angeles Rams and Matthew Stafford, arguably the most “due” guy in the NFL.

I will give Matthew Stafford all the credit in the world. He is an absolute Hall of Famer in my opinion. He was just never able to have help in Detroit. The lack of quality in the front office led to his best target,Calvin Johnson heading out to greener pastures. Literally.

Original photo credit: Primitiv

https://www.insider.com/calvin-johnson-started-a-marijuana-business-2021-6

While Matthew Stafford is due and I’m sure more Lions fans will be rooting for the Rams than there are actual true Rams fans. The Los Angeles Rams have the saddest fan base in sports. Yes of course they need to build one. But how uninterested does your new city need to be for your stadium home games to look like this

Sad.

Who would want them to win that isn’t exclusively rooting doe Matthew Stafford!?! They don’t deserve this. Bengals for sure deserve it over the Rams. I want this for the city of Cincinnati.

LOS ANGELES IS LITERALLY ON FIRE but but Merryl Streep wants to tell me I have to use paper straws from her private jet or something. It’s like the whole state is in the spin zone.

So the rest of the country is almost seeking to have the Bengals stop LA for all of us! They can not win in the first year of stadium home games there. There must be some semblance of justice in this world. Although LA is favorited in this one I am all in on the Joe BurSHOW to continue.

#JoeBurShow

Go Bengals.

Illinois Illini vs. Indiana Hoosiers (The One vs. Kofi Cockburn) pregame post

Date: Saturday, February 5
Game Time: 12:00 ET
Venue: Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, Bloomington, IN
How To Watch: ESPN
Record: Illinois (16-5), Indiana (16-5)

INDIANA V. ILLINOIS 184 (IU LEADS ALL TIME 93-90)

Big, Big, B1G matchup today (see what I did there?). Indiana has silently been a force in the Big Ten this year. Apart from some heartbreakers, least of which is the God forsaken loss at Wisconsin. SO CLOSE!!! SO CLOSE TO SNAPPING THAT LENGTHY ASS L STREAK IN MADISON!!! Indiana has locked down teams ability to hit the three in Bloomington and I believe their 37% opponent field pct. is going to play a huge factor in the overall tempo of this game. If you can’t hit shots you can’t find a rhythm.

This Indiana team just plays a balanced game together. Each man playing their role to a t in a finely tuned machine when things are running properly. Mike Woodson is really doing some great things in Bloomington, things already paying dividends! They seek to dominate the tempo by wearing you out on the defensive end. This aspect of Indiana’s game will be face no bigger test than the test of Kofi Cockburn.

I gotta hand it to Kofi Cockburn. That guy is a certified stud. This Indiana defense will be a true test for the scoring National Player of the Year candidate, who just last week absolutely balled out with 16 for 19 from the floor and 12 rebounds in Illinois’ spanking of Wisconsin.

Indiana is sitting as a -1.5 favorite with an over/under sitting at 136.5. I gotta say personally I’m going large on units for both of these bets. Seems to be an easy win. Take Indiana and the Under. I’m sorry, never fun to take the under but Indiana has set a tone with their defense at home. A tone that hasn’t yielded large scoring outputs for their opponents.

As an avid Indiana fan I’m pumped for this game between two “all things pointing to tournament bound” teams, it will be a true test of both teams. As a gambler I’d have to say you can’t bet against the deafening ruckus that is brought by the Indiana Fans in Assembly Hall.
